Operation Safe Driver: July 12-18

Operation Safe Driver

The CVSA’s Operation Safe Driver program was put into effect in 2007. Sponsored by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and in partnership with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association (FMCSA), the weeklong event will occur July 12-July 18. During this time, law enforcement agencies will be on the lookout for dangerous driving behaviors that include speeding, risky lane changes, impaired driving, distracted or reckless driving, following too closely, texting, seatbelt violations, and failure to obey traffic signals.

According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, “less traffic may be encouraging some drivers to ignore traffic safety laws, including speed limits,” and as a result, “many jurisdictions are seeing a severe spike in speeding.” With the yearly Roadcheck inspection blitz as yet unscheduled, this year’s Operation Safe Driver provides a check on unsafe driving behaviors.

CVSA President Sgt. John Samis explains, “As passenger vehicle drivers are limiting their travel to necessary trips and many commercial motor vehicle drivers are busy transporting vital goods to stores, it’s more important than ever to monitor our roadways for safe transport.”
