AMT celebrates National Bike to Work Day

Bike to Work Day 2021

National Bike Month

Did you know that May is National Bike Month?  Promoted by the League of American Bicyclists, National Bike Month was established in 1956 and showcases the benefits of bicycling in an effort to recruit more people to add regular bicycling to their lives.

And there are a number of regular bike riders among us. On any given day during the spring, summer, and fall, you’ll find a bike or two parked alongside the building to complement the cars and trucks in our parking lot.

According to The League of American Bicyclists, “40% of all trips in the U.S. are less than two miles” and this makes “bicycling a feasible and fun way to get around.”  Here at AM Transport Services, we couldn’t agree any more. That’s why every year, we participate in National Bike to Work Day.

National Bike to Work Day

This year National Bike to Work Day fell on Friday May 21st, and since we were unable to ride bikes to work last year, due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, we were determined to do it up this year.

Here at AMT, we started celebrating National Bike to Work Day in 2006, and last year was the only time in all those years, we missed out on the fun.

We had 15 participants last Friday. We met in the St. Joe parking lot at 6:30 AM, so we could ride in together.

One of the “highlights,” according to activity founder, Rob McClain, was the flat tire he experienced and had to fix along the way. Here in the office, there’s a thought that Jakob, who has an electric bike, cheated. Derek, on the other hand, must really dislike his bike, because a week later, it’s still sitting in the parking lot. (Is he hoping someone will steal it?)

We don’t celebrate anything without food, so later in the day, Colby Shawver cooked pork burgers, and our own Mason Ridgely made a rather interesting mac and cheese. As usual, we had a great time. The ride in is always fun with lots of banter (there’s always lots of banter, of course).

If you’ve never participated in National Bike to Work Day, we highly recommend it!
