Getting to know Gavin and Victoria

Gavin Lathrop and Victoria Sturm joined the AM Transport team this summer–Gavin in June and Victoria in July. We thought it might be a good time to check in with these two and ask some questions so you can get to know them a little better.

When you started working at AM Transport, what did you do?

Gavin: When I started here, I checked in on the whereabouts of truckers and loads to make sure they were on time.

Victoria: I began work as a Customer Service representative, and I built rate quotes that both teams quoted.

How has your job evolved during your time here?

Gavin: I mostly try to book loads now. I still check in on my team’s loads, but my main focus is booking loads. No big surprises yet.

Victoria: Now with my job, I currently have a list of customers I work with. I make sure appointments are scheduled and everything is squared away so we can put carriers on loads.

Any memorable incidents while on the job?

Gavin: The hot dog eating contest was pretty cool. If I could go back in time, I would and I’d try to win this time. We also had dogs to eat at any time for the next week, so it provided a LOT of food.

Victoria: So far, there have been lots of laughs and fun since I got here. One of the funniest moments was watching Carson’s chair decide it wanted to sit closer to the floor. It slid down so gracefully that Carson was still sitting on it as it moved. It was quite comical. Sorry for exposing it to the world, Big Tasty!

Tell us a little bit about your family.

Gavin: I have a mom and dad who love me a lot. I have an older brother as well as a 3-year-old nephew. I’ve definitely grown closer to my family as I’ve gotten older.

Victoria: My family consists of my mom and dad, my brother and my twin sister. With having a twin, I have always been asked questions about if we share thoughts or if we look the same. We’ve always looked pretty identical, but we have one crazy story where we actually had the same dream. We woke up that day and I began to tell her how crazy my dream was, and at the end she said she had the exact same dream but from her point of view. To this day she doesn’t remember it, but I do.

Morning or evening person?

Gavin: I like evenings more. I like waking up when the sun goes down. I like to be a night owl and do a bunch of stuff when everyone is sleeping. Working here at AM Transport doesn’t really afford me much time to be a night owl any more, though. Gotta be here early in the morning.

Victoria; EVENING! I hate early mornings, snoooooore! I used to work the night shift, and on my nights off, I would still keep the same schedule. I loved being awake at 3 in the morning when the whole world was asleep and I could make a snack and watch Netflix as the sun rose.

Do you have a favorite AMT outing yet?

Gavin: My favorite so far was the golf outing. I’m kinda high energy when I have a few drinks, so playing golf was good for me as I got to burn off some energy.

Victoria: The only one I have gotten to be part of so far is the golf outing. It was a blast even though I couldn’t play golf at all. It was just fun to be part of a fun team who works hard and plays hard!

What’s your favorite season?

Gavin: I enjoy fall the most. Football is going on, and I can wear sweats and hoodies all the time without sweating.

Victoria: Winter. I love the cold and the snow. I love dressing in the warmest clothes and eating soup and drinking hot chocolate. It’s the most wonderful time of the year as they say!

What’s your favorite food?

Gavin: Nothing specific. I do really enjoy Mexican food. I especially like this dish they have at Mi Casita in Lawrenceville, the Quesadilla Grande. It’s a bunch of green and red peppers, onions, tomatoes, and strips of steak in a tortilla all grilled up. It also has some queso blanco drizzled on the tortilla.

Victoria: My favorite food is a dish called Sancocho. It is something we ate in Colombia. It’s a soup made with the best and freshest ingredients in Colombia. My mother-in-law in Colombia makes it the best. Here is a great recipe for it! Chicken Sancocho

Tea or coffee?

Gavin: black coffee

Victoria: Coffee is the best! Especially Colombian coffee! But I do love a glass of southern iced sweet tea too!

Do you have a favorite childhood memory?

Gavin: I’m not really sure. I don’t really remember my childhood all that much. Probably building a bunch of Star Wars Legos I had when I was a kid.

Victoria: My favorite memory as a child is playing with all my cousins at my Great Grandma Fritschle’s house. We always had the most fun time together. We are still very close.

What’s the best book you’ve read in the past 12 months? If not a book, a television show, movie, or podcast.

Gavin: The best movie I watched recently was Blade Runner 2049. In the near future, synthetic humans called “replicants” are created for slave labor and other dangerous jobs. Sometimes replicants go rogue and the special police called “blade runners” have to hunt them down. The main character, a blade runner, discovers that a replicant woman had a baby and the baby is hidden somewhere. This leads him on a journey to find the child and on the way he kinda discovers what it means to be human.

Victoria: The book I’m currently reading is called Woman Evolve by Sarah Roberts. It is about becoming more than your past. It talks about the life of Eve and how she evolved to become an amazing woman after her world-known sin of eating the apple from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. It’s a great read so far, and I would for sure recommend it for every woman struggling with some things in her past or fearful of things in her future.

What’s your favorite dish to take to a potluck and would you like to share the recipe?

Gavin: I’ve never taken a dish to a potluck because I’ve never really cooked anything before.

Victoria: Chicken and cheese chowder. It’s my dad’s specialty soup that I’ve just recently learned the recipe for. I have not met a soul who doesn’t love this delicious soup. I will for sure be bringing it to an AMT potluck. Here’s a recipe you can try out!

Dogs or Cats?

Gavin: Dogs, but I don’t have any pets.

Victoria: Dogs for sure! At my house, we have 4 dachshunds and one Boston terrier. They are like our four-legged family.

Now that autumn has arrived, what is your favorite fall activity?

Gavin: I like to play soccer if I can manage to play. Usually, the only thing my family does is have a nice Thanksgiving lunch.

Victoria: My family always has big family reunions for Thanksgiving. I can’t wait for amazing food and time with my big family!

What is something you’re looking forward to in the near future?

Gavin: I really don’t know. I’m not sure what I want out of life, and I’m looking for things that bring me joy.

Victoria: Traveling! I always look forward to my next opportunity to travel this beautiful world we live in!

If you could give your 12-year-old self some advice, what would it be?

Gavin: Don’t compare yourself to others all the time. You have lots of time to figure things out. Also, play soccer.

Victoria: Live in every moment, not for the next moment. Life always moves forward, so soak in every moment while they are here.
