Operation Safe Driver

Operation Safe Driver: Is Your Supply Chain Ready?

Is Your Supply Chain Ready for July 10-16?

That’s right. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) is holding its annual Operation Safe Driver Week during the week of July 10-16.

Do you know what that means?

Every year the CVSA’s International Roadcheck (held May 17-19) and Operation Safe Driver Week can cause a tightening of truck capacity, and that means you’re likely to face higher than normal rates to get your shipments on the road and delivered on time.

What is Operation Safe Driver?

The CVSA, in partnership with the FMCSA and state and local law enforcement officials, launched Operation Safe Driver in 2007 to reduce the number of crashes involving commercial motor vehicles and cars. This year the event’s focus is on speeding. To that end, law enforcement folks will be on the roadways issuing warnings and citations to commercial motor vehicle drivers (as well as passenger vehicle drivers) who are engaged in risky driving behaviors such as speeding, improper lane usage, distracted driving, etc.

What does this mean for manufacturers and their supply chains?

During inspection weeks, it is riskier for trucks and drivers to be on the road, so we typically see limited capacity. If you have freight to move, you might see increased rates and difficulty finding reliable carriers for regular and last minute loads. Your supply chain is likely to suffer with dropped loads and longer turnaround times. And that means unhappy customers.
