4 minute read

During the stay-at-home order in Illinois, the team at AMT is working from home. We were lucky to be 100% ready to move our operations out of the office, and the team hasn’t missed a beat. We have best technology, and our team can’t be slowed down.

This week, we asked Justin a few questions so you can get to know him better. Enjoy!

Favorite Color?

Chicago Cubs blue

Skittles or M&Ms?

M&Ms

Beer or Wine? Favorites?

Definitely beer. If I am in it for the long haul, it’s Busch Light, and IPA-wise, I have been drinking Bell’s Official Hazy IPA lately, but I’m always willing to try something new for the taste buds.

Favorite Power Ranger?

I’ll have to get back with you on that.

Married? Kids?

Wife–Ashlee and Son–Masen

If someone gifted you an elephant, what would you do with it?

Ride it down Main Street and Route 130 while posing for cell-phone pictures.

Your thoughts on garden gnomes?

The only gnome I own is a Chicago Bears gnome which resides on my bookshelf.

Favorite music? Favorite performers?

I’m a big fan of Whiskey Myers, The Steel Woods, Cody Jinks, Tyler Childers, Reckless Kelly, Blackberry Smoke, and The Turnpike Troubadours. I was supposed to see The Steel Woods in Bloomington, Indiana, on April 4, but the show was postponed to December due to COVID-19. As far as favorite performers, I would have to say Whiskey Myers. My wife, Ashlee, and I have been to four of their shows and the on-stage energy is incredible. A true old-school band that travels every inch of the country performing a mixture of country, blues, and rock-and-roll.

Podcast? Sports team? Sport?

Honestly, I don’t listen to a lot of podcasts. I’m more of an avid reader with a large collection of sports books ranging from baseball, football, basketball, and auto racing. I am a die-hard Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, and Illinois Fighting Illini fan and love dirt-track racing as well. Sports is my passion. You can find me on the Olney Tiger sidelines every Friday night during football season keeping statistics, and in a gymnasium during the winter months supporting the Olney Tigers and Olney Central Blue Knights.

How long have you been in transportation? How did you end up working for AMT?

I have been in the transportation industry for five and a half years. I was looking for a career change and spoke to some friends who worked at AM Transport, and they thought I would be a good fit, so I applied. It is a fast-paced environment, which I enjoy, and you learn something new every day while working alongside a great group of people who like to have fun.

What do you do at AMT?

I am a carrier representative. Here is a summary of what I do each day. After negotiating a rate with a carrier, I send out a rate confirmation assigning them to the shipment. It is my responsibility to set the driver up on tracking and to provide load updates to our account representatives throughout transit, so they can keep the customer informed if the shipment is on track or if there is a delay due to weather, traffic, a breakdown, etc. I spend the majority of my time on the phone with drivers and dispatchers while also checking emails and communicating with my AMT teammates. I am also responsible for building lane capacity and updating carrier profiles in our system.

What apps, gadgets, etc. can you not live without to work?

Multiple computer monitors, a laptop, headset, keyboard, mouse, calculator, and coffee mug.

What do you think about when you are alone in the car?

I just reflect on the day and decompress. If the weather is nice, I’ll roll down the windows and enjoy the fresh air.

If you could be any animal in the world, what would you be?

Probably a bird. I think it would be cool to just fly around all day and take in the sights and sounds from the sky.

What’s the best Christmas gift you ever received or given?

My son, Masen, was born on December 23, 2013, so nothing will ever top that. The best Christmas gift I ever gave was an engagement ring to Ashlee.

What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you recently?

Masen saw a Cardinal and Blue Jay in our tree and said, “Boo, Cardinals.” Spoken like a true Cubs fan.

How do you recharge?

I enjoy spending time with Masen when I get home from work, whether it’s playing baseball or basketball, going to the park, or going for a walk. I also enjoy having some cold beverages and watching a game or an auto race which I miss dearly right now and will never take for granted again, and doing yard work.

What are you currently reading or what do you recommend?

The Cubs by New York Times bestselling author, Tom Verducci, about the Chicago Cubs’ run to the 2016 World Series title.

What’s your superpower?

I can polish of a large pizza from Joe’s in one sitting.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Paraphrasing here: Happiness in life doesn’t come from what you do, but rather how you do what you do and who you do it with.

or this from my wife: The players can’t hear you when you yell at the TV.
